100 Greatest 80's Rock Music Songs Of All Time

80's rock musicYou may have already seen this on VH1 but if you have not then it is available on the World Wide Web. The 100 greatest songs of 80's rock music are listed at rockonthenet.com and I was pretty surprised at the results. Some of the songs listed were more in the "pop" genre and not rock, but it all depends on how you classify it. I was also surprised to see that "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" by Wang Chung was number 99, but then again I'm not the one that made the list.

If you were into the rock music scene during the 1980's then you will definitely get a kick out of this. I was born in the 80's but I definitely remember almost every one of these songs coming out of my parents' stereo system. I am sure that almost anyone who reads this list is going to disagree with some of it, but it is still entertaining nonetheless. Check out http://www.rockonthenet.com/archive/2006/vh180s.htm to see the list, and I am curious to know how many of you agree with it and how many of you do not.

Japanese Rock Music and its History

japanese rock musicAvid fans of Rock and Roll should definitely research Japanese rock music if they have not already done so. It is rather interesting to see how music from various parts of the world can have an influence on other nations and their cultures. For example, when psychedelic rock was booming in the 60's, bands from the United States and the U.K. were having a direct influence on some of the musicians in Japan.

Japanese rock bands in the 1960's generally stayed away from drug-induced song writing and sometimes even wrote songs that showed their disapproval of drugs. This is the most interesting part, because Japanese musicians were still playing music that sounded similar to that of other nations. The only difference was that they chose to not follow the same lifestyle.

As the decades progressed, so did Japanese rock music. Eventually, the concept of "visual kei" became very important for Japanese musicians. Visual kei refers to the appearance of a band and the imagery that it produces. This is a staple in Japanese rock music and many bands have used visual kei in expressing their images.

I suggest that you search the Internet and learn about some of Japan's historically famous rock bands. Check out bands such as The Golden Cups, The Tempters, Boredoms, Buck-Tick, Acidman, X Japan and Shonen Knife.

Excellent Progressive Rock Music Resource

progressive rock musicA genre like progressive rock music is very ambiguous, and there are many different bands that can be put into this classification. Some might argue that certain bands with this label do not belong in the category, while others might fight such an argument. Basically, the criteria for being a "progressive" rock band includes pushing the boundaries of song structure, and incorporating elements of older influential genres such as jazz and classical music. In other words, new and original sounds help rock and roll make progress.

I came across a website called Prog Archives which is basically a giant discography of many progressive rock bands that have recorded music over the past few decades. This website also claims to have free MP3 downloads, but I would not personally buy into it. Most of the time, "free" MP3 downloads end up costing something.

I would certainly recommend checking out www.progarchives.com if you are interested in discovering some new progressive rock music bands. Also, keep in mind that a lot of bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Rush, The Moody Blues and Jethro Tull are the pioneers of this genre and that many newer progressive bands that you may listen to have been influenced by these artists in several different ways.
